7 Writers get to strut their stuff (the seven-line challenge)

Well, now and then, my good tweep and fellow author, Charlie Plunkett, www.charlieplunkett.co.uk, challenges me to post something interesting for others to read. This time she has introduced me to the seven line challenge.

My seven line challenge is taken from Sugar Cane, my first novel. My journey with Beth, the heroine of the story has been quite interesting and as I grow as a writer, she becomes more and more important and endearing to me. The story is about a woman who finds herself a child again, unsure of her future, unsure of who she is and unsure of where she's supposed to be going other than to the island of Mauritius to uncover the hidden truth that rocks her world to its chore.

My seven lines describe the moment that Beth discovers the answer to the first secret withheld from her:

I had to learn to content myself with knowing nothing more about my father than what I saw and heard with my own eyes and ears. So you can imagine how I felt when, at nine years of age, I discovered the passport nestling between the pages of a pornographic magazine. Hiding in his garage, I didn't even query the fact that the passport said that his first name was different. I didn't even study the photograph. All I needed to know was bundled into a nine letter word. I hid a scrapbook under my bed from that day forth and for five years, surreptitiously collected, cut up and glued into it any holiday brochures or magazine articles that I could lay my hands on that mentioned the elusive island of Mauritius.

I now pass the seven line challenge baton onto another seven writers who I admire, respect and who amuse me greatly in the twittersphere, blogosphere and fbsphere (or whatever you're supposed to call it), sure in the knowledge that they will entertain you and inspire you to enjoy their and others work.

Guys this is your mission:  Go to line 7 on either page 7 or page 77 of your manuscript and do a post with the next 7 lines, then tag 7 people to keep the challenge going! This a short and savvy way to see what others out there in the blogosphere are writing. Thanks for sharing and spreading the love!!

  1. Absolutely fabulous! Reading your 7 lines has made me want to re-read Sugarcane. It's such a brilliant book and for anyone who hasn't read it yet this 7-line snippet is very enticing I would highly recommend it.
